Preliminary approval received for the downtown Kelowna project

The UBC Downtown Kelowna project recently received preliminary approval from the Board of Governors meeting on December 5, 2021 to move forward with this project.

In June 2020, UBC President Santa Ono announced the next major step in the evolution of UBC’s presence in the Okanagan and in its ability to serve the needs of the BC Interior region. UBC will occupy a portion of the leasable space at the institutional levels of the project.

Since February 2021, design work has been in progress and is on track for construction commencing late 2022. The academic space program is being accommodated in 105,000 gross square feet.

The university is also actively seeking perspectives from the public on how they would like to engage with UBC in future new spaces and ways to work together to enhance community-university relationship in the coming years. The public is encouraged to send their feedback to

This project will create a significantly enhanced presence for UBC in downtown Kelowna, building on existing activities such as the Southern Medical program campus adjacent to Kelowna General Hospital, the Innovation Library, e@ubc activities in the downtown Innovation Centre, and the partnership with the Rotary Centre for the Arts.
